That evening they slept on the open savannah with the sound of a lion roaring in the distance and the sharp bark of zebras to wake them at dawn. The next day torrential rains set in, and they marched all day long, soaked to the skin. By the time a village came into view that evening, RyAnne had never been so relieved to see a grass-roofed hut in all her life.
And according to Trent, this was the last village they would need to stay in before they reached the one on the shore of the lake where Papa would build his mission. They only had half a day’s journey on the morrow, and they would be “home.”
They were exhausted. The whole band of them.
At the edge of the village, under the meager shelter of some palms, their group came to a halt.
With Kako by his side, Trent stalked through the downpour toward the center of the village, tossing over his shoulder, “Everyone wait here, and I’ll see if I can find the headman. This will be a good place to make camp for the night.”
He didn’t even glance her way, and RyAnne pressed her lips together.
Dipping one shoulder toward the ground, she let her pack slide off onto the toe of one of her boots to keep it up out of the mud. She rubbed the sore muscles in her shoulders and rolled her head, feeling the release of tension all along her spine. She let out a sigh and glanced around the village.
They’d passed through several during their inland trek along the river, and this one seemed more rundown than the others, although thankfully she didn’t see any signs of the brutality they had previously witnessed.
The huts here were unkempt, the thatching tattered, and the walls crumbling in places. The gardens they had come through along the perimeter of the village had been in sore need of weeding. And the paths were unswept and littered with detritus and debris. A couple pens for holding cattle appeared to be one bovine kick away from total collapse, and the cattle were so thin she could count the ribs of the poor beasts from here. None lowed. They simply stood, heads hanging. The only sign that they even lived was an occasional swish of a tail.
Trent returned a few moments later with a frustrated look gleaming in his eyes. “The headman says we can stay, but we’ll have to feed ourselves, and there is only one hut at our disposal.”
A grumble of surprise made the rounds of the soaking-wet natives. And Kako exclaimed something loudly to his companions in their native tongue.
Trent turned to the man. “What did you say?” he asked in Swahili.
Kako shuffled his feet and glanced toward the village, licking his lips, eyes wide. He laid a hand over his chest “I am the son of the great-chief of this area. The great-chief resides in the village of our destination along the banks of the great lake. This chief here”—he indicated the village before them—”is an under-headman.
